About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society 

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of 12 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches and 131 District/Woreda Branches, 599 Woreda Red Cross Committee  and 5871 Kebele Red Cross  committees.

ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.

Project Description

The USAID Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Activity is a five-year USAID-funded program implemented by a consortium of partners including the Ethiopian Red Cross Society through the prime recipient of RTI. The purpose of the DRM Activity is to strengthen DRM planning and preparedness capacity, improve DRM coordination, enhance resource mobilization and management, and enable timely implementation of anticipatory actions to preempt crises and reduce the impacts of shocks. The activity will also strengthen gender in emergencies (GiE) capacity, increase private sector engagement in DRM, and expand local organizations’ capacity to engage in DRM. The Activity will provide strategic support to DRM institutions in the implementation of Ethiopia’s new Disaster Risk Management Policy and Disaster Risk Finance Strategy.

Position Description

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society is seeking competent project coordinator for this five-year USAID-funded program. The project coordinator will play a critical role in the facilitation of project implementation particularly on planning and preparedness as well as coordination of the the DRM activities at the decentralized structure. S/He would provide implementation assistance on monitoring and supervision to ensure the different components ERCS has engaged is well managed and contributed to the overall success of the project.

To be based in Addis Ababa, the project coordinator will report to the Emergency Preparedness and Response manager.

Key Roles and Responsibilities: 

• Act as ERCS operational contact point towards mainting collaboration and exchange of information among actors of the DRM activity.
• Prepare progress reports and provide regular and progress update to ERCS management with specific reference to the DRM activity;
• Provide day today technical assistance to ERCS branches and ensure the DRM team in the field is well capacitated;
• Take the lead in the development of ERCS planning at branch level, ensure alignment and harmonization of the plan with the priority of local DRM activities; work closely with consortium members to ensure coordination of tasks, timelines, resources and priorities;
• Support branches on reporting and ensure quality and timely reporting requirements;
• Ensure timely budget transfer to branches and monitor project budget utilization is as per approved work plan.
• Attend regular coordination meetings with humanitarian partners and forums for joint after-action reviews and follow up on any recommendations on Activity adaptation.
