Objectives &Expected Results:

Objectives &Expected Results: Under the supervision of the Project Manager (from CUAMM side) and the Medical Director of Suhul General Hospital, the Pediatrician will lead efforts to enhance the quality and accessibility of child health services across project-targeted facilities, mainly Sehul Hospital. The primary objective is to provide comprehensive clinical care ranging from neonatal to children, while fostering a culture of compassionate, evidence-based practice and strengthening the capacity of local health staff to ensure long-term improvements in maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) outcomes.

Specific Tasks and Activities

• Provide high-quality clinical care to neonates, infants, children in targeted health facilities.
• Build the capacity of local health staff through training, mentoring, and clinical supervision on pediatric protocols.
• Support the effective management of SAM and MAM cases in coordination with the nutrition team.
• Strengthen the integration of neonatal and pediatric services to ensure continuity of care for mothers and children.
• Contribute to monitoring, reporting, and data analysis to inform evidence-based pediatric interventions.

Job Responsibility :

The Pediatrician will be based at Suhul Hospital in Shire. He/She will be primarily assigned to the Neonatal Unit, while also providing technical support to the Pediatric Ward, Pediatric ICU, Stabilization Center, and Emergency Department, particularly during daily clinical rounds.
Pediatric and Neonatal Clinical Care:

• Collaborate with the pediatricians in charge of the NICU at Suhul Hospital, supporting local staff in providing high-quality medical care, ensuring the correct use of equipment, adherence to national treatment guidelines, and provision of on-the-job training.
• Collaborate with the pediatricians in charge of the Pediatric Department to diagnose and treat a wide range of pediatric illnesses, from common childhood infections to chronic conditions in the Pediatric Ward and PICU, while participating in daily multidisciplinary clinical rounds.
• Manage pediatric emergencies and provide acute care as required, while supervising the proper recording and documentation of neonatal and pediatric referrals (IN and OUT) through the Pediatric Emergency Department.
• Support the organization and actively participate in maternal and neonatal death audits at Suhul General Hospital, contributing to quality improvement initiatives.
• Train local health personnel (physicians, nurses, and midwives) on pediatric and neonatal protocols, clinical management, emergency treatment, and evidence-based practices.
• Conduct bedside practical and theoretical refresher sessions to strengthen the clinical knowledge and skills of healthcare workers in pediatric and neonatal care.

Management of Pediatric Malnutrition:

• Collaborate with the nutrition team to manage cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) with complications in the Stabilization Center.
• Ensure adherence to national and international protocols for the management of Severe Acute Malnutrition.
• Provide expert advice on nutrition, patient safety, and healthy childcare practices at the Maternal Waiting Home and Stabilization Center waiting area in collaboration with hospital staff.

Supporting Maternal and Child Health:

• Participate in and contribute to Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health initiatives and quality improvement activities organized by the hospital or TGRHB, in agreement with the Project Manager.

Monitoring and Reporting:

• Document clinical data and ensure that patient records are accurate, complete, and maintained according to hospital standards.
• Prepare regular reports on clinical progress and the impact of pediatric and neonatal activities.
• Analyze epidemiological data to identify disease trends and develop targeted response strategies.
• Adhere to national and international child health guidelines and ensure compliance with hospital policies and clinical protocols.
  Coordination and Collaboration:
• Participate in regular meetings with the project team and relevant health authorities, as required.
• Act in a spirit of mutual cooperation with all colleagues, regardless of seniority or secondment status, while upholding humanitarian principles.
• Cooperate with doctors, department heads, and the Matron to establish and strengthen an in-hospital continuing education program for all hospital staff through bedside teaching and morning sessions.
• Share professional knowledge with colleagues and use every opportunity to mentor nurses, nursing students, and other healthcare professionals during routine clinical work.
• Be available to undertake specific responsibilities assigned by the Medical Director as they arise and as agreed.
• Develop success stories documenting patient recovery journeys and transformational outcomes for project reporting.

Other:

Perform any other duties requested by the Project Manager. Depending on project activities and operational needs, responsibilities may be adapted and evolve according to specific project requirements.

Required Qualification and Education Level
• Medical Doctor (MD) degree with specialization in Pediatrics from a recognized institution.
• A Neonatology Fellowship is considered an added value.
Years of Experience
• Minimum of 2–3 years of demonstrable post-specialization clinical experience in pediatric and neonatal care.
• Previous experience working with an NGO or humanitarian organization is an added advantage.
Certification:
• Certification or training in Compassionate Child Healthcare, Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI), Basic NICU, Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT), Helping Babies Breathe (HBB), or other relevant pediatric/neonatal training is an asset.
Competencies Required:
• Demonstrated ability to mentor junior medical staff, nurses, interns, and nursing students rotating through the Pediatric Department.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and keeping up to date with advances in pediatric and neonatal care and best practices.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to educate parents and caregivers on child health, disease prevention, nutrition, and treatment adherence.
License:
• Valid professional license issued by the relevant regulatory body and authorized to practice medicine in Ethiopia.
Language
• Proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of the local language (Tigrigna) is considered an added value.
