Livelihood Specialist Full Time

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Livelihood Expert will be responsible to assess the demand, supply and potential for livelihoods opportunities for targeted rural beneficiaries’ through designing and implementation of various ecofriendly income generating activities in order to maximize the socio-economic benefits of target households. Most importantly, he will manage and lead livelihood initiatives in the strand of income generating activities with excellent communication, business and entrepreneur , marketing and leadership skills within the various livelihood frameworks including cooperative management, self-help groups, micro financing and  value chain approaches.

Generic Responsibilities

• Promote MELCA’s values in helping the target community to improve their livelihoods and ensure enhancement of the adaptive and resilience capacities of those communities
• Monitoring changes over time based on verifiable outputs, outcomes and impacts indicators that shows improvement and built resilience among the target communities and come up with and compile stories of changes

• Adhere to Eco-friendly livelihoods improvement technical SOPs / guidelines and upgrade the same and come up with workable IGA package
• Ensure Livelihoods project interventions comply with SPM, policies and guidelines of the organization
• Responsible for developing funding proposals related to livelihhoods improvement
• Coordinate and manage Job creation and Livelihood improvement project implementation (activities, budget and project documentation) in line with proposals, strategies and donor requirements
• Ensure capacity building of project staff and transfer key skills to end users and benficeries
• Liaison and collaborate with relevant local stakeholders and partners in relevant forums/cluster/working groups.
• Specific Roles and Responsibilities of the Position

Project management related

• Coordinate and lead need based researches, market surveys and similar topics in the process of supporting livelihoods improvement of the target groups
• Provide guidance and technical assistance in the development of business plans, marketing plans, access to finance and related business development requirements for target groups.
• Lead the assessment and approval process of viable business ideas of target beneficiaries together with project staffs and the target groups
• Lead and coordinate soft and hard skill capacity development trainings and other relevant knowledge and awareness needs for livelihoods improvement target groups across all projects and ensure implementation of post follow-up monitoring and technical supports
• Ensure project activities target beneficiaries in the most effective way and identify new and better ways of livelihood assistance
• Work closely with Gender and social inclusion officer or Project Gender Officers and Community Capacity Lead to integrate livelihoods activities with women and youth empowerment and to add value to other project activity goals
• Assist obtaining appropriate association certificates and business certificates/licenses, import/export permits and assisting with opening of bank accounts for local communities in the project target geography;
• Identify existing private and public sector organizations working within the target geography to foster relationship and collaboration to achieve common goals and results;
• Design and implement initiatives to create business networks on behalf of target beneficiaries, build relationship with potential business firms and develop market outlets for products of the beneficiaries
• Promote and facilitate vertical and horizontal growth of businesses by the cooperatives and scaling up the economic development within members of the group and surrounding community
• Keep track of baseline data for each project intervention, progressively update, monitor, evaluate and report the trend of livelihood activities to the management;

Job Requirement

• Required Minimum Education: MSs/MA degree in agriculture, economics, social sciences, development studies or related fields.

Remuneration: – Negotiable for all positions.

Terms of employment: – Full time contractual employment for one year with high possibility of renewal.

Duty Station:  Addis Ababa (Head Office) for all positions.
