About the Organization
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is a vital regional arm of the United Nations, established to promote economic and social development across its member states. As a center of excellence, the ECA provides research, policy analysis, and technical cooperation to help African nations navigate the complexities of global development. Our headquarters in Addis Ababa serves as a premier diplomatic hub, housing thousands of international staff and hosting high-level summits that shape the future of the continent.
Operating at the heart of international diplomacy requires a robust and transparent administrative framework. The Facilities Management Section (FMS) is responsible for the stewardship of the UN’s physical and real estate assets, ensuring that every square meter of the compound is managed with financial precision. To work at the ECA is to join a global mission where administrative excellence directly supports the operational success of the United Nations and its various specialized agencies.
We pride ourselves on a professional work culture grounded in the UN core values of integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity. Our team members operate in a multicultural environment that prizes accuracy, financial accountability, and proactive problem-solving. We offer a workspace that adheres to international standards, providing staff with the opportunity to engage with sophisticated enterprise resource planning systems and complex real estate portfolios.
The United Nations is committed to achieving a diverse and inclusive workforce. We believe that a variety of perspectives is essential to managing a world-class facility that serves a diverse global community. We provide a stable and supportive environment that recognizes administrative expertise and encourages professional growth within the fields of finance, accounting, and real estate management.
In line with our commitment to gender parity and social inclusion, we strongly encourage women and members of underrepresented groups to apply for this administrative role. The United Nations recognizes that financial and administrative sectors benefit significantly from diverse talent. We are dedicated to providing a workplace where all professionals can thrive and contribute to the financial transparency and operational integrity of the United Nations’ physical presence in Africa.
Job Description
The role of the Lease Processing Assistant is a specialized financial and administrative position located within the Project Planning and Implementation Unit (PPIU). This role is strategically vital, as it governs the management of real estate leases and rental income that sustain the “UN Common House” initiative. By managing the lifecycle of lease contracts—from creation and renewal to termination—you ensure that the ECA’s real estate operations are legally sound and financially optimized.
The strategic impact of this role is found in your ability to maintain the financial accuracy of the commission’s rental infrastructure. You act as a key liaison between facility planners, managers, and the finance section, ensuring that every architectural object and pooled space is correctly translated into a lease contract. Your oversight of internal and external lease-out contracts ensures that the United Nations and its tenant agencies operate under clear, documented financial agreements that support mutual operational goals.
A day in the life of a Lease Processing Assistant at the ECA involves high-level data analysis and system-based contract management. You will be responsible for simulating cash flows, verifying the correctness of financial postings, and coordinating with the Supply Chain Management Section (SCMS) for catering and commercial service contracts. This role offers the unique opportunity to conduct rental market surveys within Addis Ababa, providing the data-driven insights necessary to assess market trends and service costs associated with building rentals.
Furthermore, this position carries a high degree of collaborative responsibility, as you will work with the Budget and Business Management Units to prepare annual rental income projections and estimates. You will play a leading role in building Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and developing a comprehensive service catalogue for the Facilities Management Section. Your expertise in managing Business Partner (BP) data and earmarked funds ensures that the UN’s financial systems remain accurate and transparent.
The long-term impact of your work is the institutionalization of rigorous real estate management protocols that protect the UN’s financial interests. By maintaining a clear database of premises master data and keeping meticulous records of all rental changes, you ensure continuity and accountability. This role provides an unparalleled opportunity to develop as a finance and real estate specialist within an international framework, contributing to the professional management of the United Nations’ extensive property portfolio in Ethiopia.
