OVERVIEW

PATH is now hiring for our next project, implementing an integrated, community-based program in the West Hararghe Zone that supports vulnerable children, youth, women, and communities through coordinated education, wellbeing, protection, and economic resilience interventions. The program focuses on expanding equitable access to education by supporting school enrollment, attendance, accelerated learning for out-of-school children, and inclusive school environments, while also strengthening children’s physical, psychosocial, and protective wellbeing through health, nutrition, mental health support, and community-based child protection systems. In parallel, PATH facilitates poverty-targeted women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to strengthen livelihoods, financial inclusion, and climate-resilient economic capacity, complemented by time-bound emergency and recovery support for households facing acute shocks. Through this integrated approach, PATH works alongside schools, communities, and local institutions to promote long-term resilience, dignity, and opportunity for vulnerable populations.

Position Purpose

The Education Officer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing education-focused project activities aimed at improving access, retention, attendance, inclusion, protection, and learning outcomes for vulnerable children. The role ensures that education interventions are technically sound, inclusive, child-protective, aligned with Ethiopian education policies, and implemented in line with approved project designs and donor requirements. The Education Officer leads programmatic implementation and quality oversight, while financial approvals, procurement, and MEAL system control remain with the relevant units.

Key Responsibilities

School and Community Coordination

The Education Officer shall:

• Coordinate closely with selected schools, PTAs, and Woreda/Kebele Education Offices.
• Represent the organization in education coordination meetings.
• Facilitate collaboration between schools, parents, and community structures.
• Lead community mobilization for education initiatives and campaigns.

Expected Outputs:

• Documented coordination meetings
• Strengthened school-community partnerships

Education Needs Assessment and Targeting

The Education Officer shall:

• Conduct and supervise education-related assessments including:
  • Enrollment and attendance reviews
  • Identification of out-of-school children
  • Learning gap assessments
• Lead transparent beneficiary selection processes.
• Support and monitor student academic and behavioral assessments.

Expected Outputs:

• Verified beneficiary lists
• Education and performance assessment records

Inclusive Education & Special Needs Support

The Education Officer shall:

• Facilitate inclusive education practices within supported schools.
• Conduct campaigns promoting inclusive education and equal access.
• Identify and support children with special needs.
• Assess school infrastructure for accessibility (ramps, toilets, classroom access).
• Recommend improvements to ensure physical accessibility for children with disabilities.

Accelerated Learning Program (ALP)

The Education Officer shall:

• Oversee implementation of Accelerated Learning Programs.
• Monitor re-entry and transition of over-age or out-of-school learners.
• Track academic progression of ALP students.

Implementation of Education Interventions

The Education Officer shall:

• Oversee:
  • Enrollment and re-enrollment support
  • Remedial classes and tutoring
  • Life skills sessions
  • Get Back to School campaigns
• Ensure all activities align with approved workplans.

Child Protection and School Safety

The Education Officer shall:

• Strengthen child protection prevention mechanisms in schools.
• Facilitate school-level safeguarding awareness.
• Support formation and strengthening of child protection structures.
• Identify and report safeguarding concerns in line with policy.

• Functional school protection mechanisms
• Timely incident reporting

Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM)

The Education Officer shall:

• Promote MHM awareness in schools.
• Support establishment or strengthening of MHM rooms where applicable.
• Coordinate hygiene education activities.
• Ensure girls’ participation is not hindered by menstrual health barriers.

• MHM awareness sessions conducted
• Improved attendance of adolescent girls

Capacity Building & Community Engagement

The Education Officer shall:

• Facilitate training for:
  • Teachers
  • PTA members
  • Community leaders
• Lead community engagement and mobilization campaigns.
• Promote strong parental involvement in education.

• Training sessions conducted
• Community mobilization records

Coordination with MEAL and Reporting

The Education Officer shall:

• Coordinate with MEAL staff to ensure education indicators are tracked.
• Support data collection and validation.
• Use Excel and data visualization tools to analyze attendance and performance trends.
• Utilize digital data collection applications (e.g., KoboToolbox).
• Prepare clear monthly and quarterly narrative reports in English.

Supervision of Education Field Staff

The Education Officer shall:

• Provide technical supervision and guidance to education staff.
• Review field documentation and performance.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Educational Planning, Social Sciences, Development Studies, or related field

Experience

• Minimum 3–5 years in education programming
• Experience working with schools and education offices
• Experience in inclusive education and community mobilization

Language Skills

• Fluency in spoken Afaan Oromo (required)
• Strong English report writing and professional communication skills (required)

Computer Skills

• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (data tracking and basic visualization)

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Gross Salary

• 60,000 -70,000 ETB, salary is fixed to current USD exchange rate
