The National Bank of Ethiopia is the central bank of Ethiopia. Its headquarters are in the capital city of Addis Ababa. Mamo Mihretu is the current governor of the bank. The bank is active in promoting financial inclusion policy and is a member of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion.
Modern banking in Ethiopia was first introduced in 1906 when the Bank of Abyssinia was established based on the agreement being reached between the Ethiopian government and the British owned National Bank of Egypt. Bank Abyssinia was inaugurated on February 16, 1906.
