About the Organization
The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is a strategic regional entity established by the Economic and Social Council to encourage economic cooperation among its member states and promote sustainable development across the African continent. As a center of excellence, the ECA provides vital research, policy analysis, and technical expertise to help Africa navigate the complexities of global economic trends. Our headquarters in Addis Ababa serves as a premier diplomatic hub, hosting international conferences and housing thousands of dedicated staff members working toward a prosperous and integrated Africa.
Maintaining the physical infrastructure of such a high-profile compound requires a commitment to excellence, transparency, and technical precision. The Facilities Management Section (FMS) is responsible for the stewardship of the UN’s physical assets, ensuring that every office, conference hall, and utility system operates at peak efficiency. To work with the ECA is to be part of a global mission, where the quality of the physical environment directly supports the success of high-level diplomatic and economic negotiations.
We pride ourselves on a professional work culture grounded in the UN core values of integrity, professionalism, and respect for diversity. Our team members operate in a multicultural environment that prizes innovation and technical accuracy. We offer a workspace that adheres to international safety standards while providing staff with the opportunity to engage with complex, large-scale facility management projects.
The United Nations is committed to achieving a diverse and inclusive workforce. We believe that a variety of perspectives is essential to solving the unique architectural and engineering challenges of a major international compound. We provide a stable and supportive environment that recognizes technical expertise and encourages professional growth within the engineering and project management sectors.
In line with our commitment to gender parity and social inclusion, we strongly encourage women and members of underrepresented groups to apply for this technical assistant role. The United Nations recognizes that the engineering and facility management sectors benefit significantly from diverse talent. We are dedicated to providing a workplace where all technical professionals can thrive and contribute to the structural integrity and aesthetic quality of the United Nations’ physical presence in Africa.
Job Description
The role of the Facilities Management Assistant (G4) is a specialized technical and administrative position located within the Project Planning and Implementation Unit (PPIU). This role is strategically vital as it supports the execution of major capital projects that define the future of the ECA compound. By assisting in the design and documentation of both new and existing facilities, you ensure that the United Nations possesses a functional, safe, and modern infrastructure that meets international standards.
The strategic impact of this role is found in the precision of the technical documentation and project monitoring you provide. You act as a key support pillar for the Capital Project Unit, ensuring that concept designs are translated into detailed, actionable drawings. Your role in monitoring contractors and consultants ensures that the UN’s financial investments are protected and that physical projects are executed in accordance with the best professional practices and strict contract requirements.
A day in the life of a Facilities Management Assistant at the ECA involves a dynamic combination of office-based drafting and on-site project verification. You will be responsible for taking measurements and calculating quantities on-site to verify the accuracy of contractor invoices, ensuring absolute financial accountability. This role offers the unique opportunity to manage complex project files and contribute to the ongoing development of improved systems and processes within a major international engineering division.
Furthermore, this position carries a high degree of collaborative responsibility, as you will assist the Head of the Major Capital Unit and the liaison office during technical discussions and project clearance phases. Your ability to prepare bill of materials, cost estimates, and project timelines is essential for the effective planning of in-house and outsourced projects. This role provides an unparalleled platform to master UN-specific project management protocols and contribute to the administrative and technical excellence of the commission.
The long-term impact of your work is the institutionalization of rigorous drafting and documentation standards that extend the lifecycle of the ECA’s high-value buildings. By maintaining accurate records and establishing effective relationships with contractors, you create a foundation of structural reliability. This role provides an excellent opportunity to grow as a technical specialist within an international framework, contributing to the professional management of Africa’s most significant diplomatic site.
